A tournament chess clock must support the event's exact time control. Before purchase, test display readability from the player and arbiter positions and confirm whether the model permits time and move-count correction. Buyers should compare documented functions and equipment status—not rely only on a “professional” label. For clubs and schools, ease of setup, durability, battery management and replacement cost also matter.
1. What time control does your event use?
Event regulations specify a countdown, Fischer increment, delay or multi-period control. Confirm whether the clock supports the exact structure in the event regulations. A large number of presets is useful only when the required mode is easy to identify and reproduce across every board.

2. Verify model-specific FIDE evidence
FIDE uses distinct equipment labels, so look for the exact model in a current FIDE list or decision. LEAP KK9908 and KK9909 appear in FIDE's current digital-clock table. FIDE also published a separate KK9909 endorsement under decision CM2-2024/17. A seller's general “FIDE standard” statement is weaker than a direct model-specific source.
3. Consider what the arbiter can see and change
A tournament clock should clearly show which side is running and which player first passed a time control. Organisers should also check whether time and move counts can be corrected without resetting the game. If arbiters must monitor clocks from a distance, test the display and lever indicator from every intended arbiter position before the event.
4. Balance portability and visibility
A compact clock is easier to store, transport and issue to players. A larger chassis changes storage space and the viewing area; verify both against the venue and transport plan. KK9908 is designed around a compact 140 × 93 × 49 mm body, while KK9909 uses a larger 165 × 95 × 65 mm chassis and colour-coded lever. PQ9918 emphasises an extra-large display.
5. Plan batteries and setup before the event
Use fresh batteries of the specified type, keep labelled spares and test every clock with the intended time control. Save custom settings where the clock supports memory, and give arbiters a short model-specific setup sheet. Using one clock type across an event simplifies support and reduces setting errors.
6. For clubs, compare total purchase cost
Unit price is only one part of a club order. Compare delivery, duties, spare units, storage and the time required to configure every clock. For every club order, compare quoted parcel, air and sea options by total cost and delivery date. Select only the option whose quoted terms meet the event deadline and budget.
